What Should Baby Wear Under a Swaddle in Aircond? (Simple Guide for Malaysian Parents)

Newborn asleep on their back in a cot at night, wearing a grey TatoWrap zip swaddle in a room with the aircond on

Quick answer

Onesie inside, swaddle outside. With the aircond on, dress baby in a short-sleeve onesie (long-sleeve if the room is 23°C or colder) and zip a light swaddle over it. With only a fan on a hot night, skip the onesie: a nappy and the swaddle are enough. You do not need a muslin blanket on top. Check baby's chest: warm and dry is right.

It's 2am. The aircond is on. Is baby cold?

So you add a muslin blanket. Then you worry baby is too hot, or that the blanket will end up over their face. Most of the advice online doesn't help, because it was written for countries where a baby's room is 18°C in winter.

Malaysian nights need a simpler rule.

What should baby wear under a swaddle?

A onesie, and nothing on top of the swaddle. Think of it as two layers:

  1. Inside: a onesie. Baby's clothing, against the skin. Shops also call it a bodysuit or romper. Pick a thin cotton or bamboo one with short or long sleeves depending on the room.
  2. Outside: the swaddle. A zip swaddle like TatoWrap goes over the onesie and works like a wearable blanket.

That second layer is the reason you no longer need the muslin blanket. A loose blanket in the cot can slip over baby's face, which is why safe-sleep guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics says to keep the cot clear of blankets. A zip swaddle keeps baby covered and snug, and it can't come loose in the night.

Keep the muslin. It is still the best burp cloth and nursing cover you own. It just doesn't belong in the cot.

What should baby wear to sleep with aircond or a fan? (Chart)

The swaddle stays the same every night. Only the onesie changes.

Your room tonight Inside Outside
Fan only, hot night (27°C and above) Nappy only TatoWrap swaddle. If baby's chest still feels hot or sweaty, leave the swaddle off for that sleep
Aircond on a gentle setting (24°C to 26°C) Short-sleeve onesie TatoWrap swaddle
Aircond on a cool setting (22°C to 23°C) Long-sleeve onesie TatoWrap swaddle
Very cold aircond or the highlands (21°C and below) Long-sleeve onesie with legs TatoWrap swaddle

Use this for the first night, then let baby's chest decide (see the next section). Every baby runs a little warmer or cooler.

A note on the numbers: safe-sleep charities such as The Lullaby Trust recommend a room of 16°C to 20°C, which few Malaysian homes reach. Because our rooms are warmer, the safe direction is fewer layers, not more. In very hot weather, the same charity says a short-sleeve vest or just a nappy is fine.

How do I know if my baby is too hot or too cold?

Put two fingers on baby's chest or the back of the neck. It takes five seconds.

  • Warm and dry: just right. Leave everything as it is.
  • Hot, sweaty or damp hair: too hot. Change to a lighter onesie, or none.
  • Cool to the touch: switch to a long-sleeve onesie.

Do not judge by hands and feet. They are usually cooler than the rest of the body, and that is normal.

Too hot matters more than too cold. Overheating is linked to a higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), so the American Academy of Pediatrics tells parents to watch for sweating, damp hair, flushed cheeks and fast breathing in a swaddled baby.

How should I set the aircond for a swaddled baby?

There is no single right number: measure the temperature at the cot, keep the airflow off baby, and dress baby for the room using the chart above.

  1. Use a room thermometer. The number on the remote is the target, not the temperature at the cot. A simple thermometer near the cot tells you the truth.
  2. Keep the cot out of the airflow. Point the vent away. Cold air blowing straight on baby makes one side cold while the room reads fine.
  3. Dress for the coldest part of the night. Rooms keep cooling after a few hours of aircond. Check baby's chest once before you sleep and again at the first night feed.
  4. Keep the cot clear. No muslin blanket, pillow or bolster. If baby needs more warmth, change the onesie, not the bedding.

For context, lowland Malaysia averages about 27°C all year, with humidity often above 80% (Britannica). That is why the same baby can need a onesie under the swaddle at night with the aircond on, and only a nappy for a fan-cooled afternoon nap.

What are common mistakes when dressing a baby under a swaddle?

Most come from adding warmth in the wrong place.

  • A muslin blanket on top of the swaddle. It adds heat and can ride up over the face. The swaddle already does its job.
  • A hat or mittens indoors. Babies release heat through the head and hands. Covering them makes overheating more likely.
  • Thick pyjamas under the swaddle. In our climate a thin onesie is almost always enough.
  • Dressing for the remote. 24°C on the remote can be 26°C at the cot. Measure.

Can baby still wear a swaddle once they start rolling?

Yes, with the arms out. You don't have to give up the swaddle; you change how it is worn.

Once baby shows signs of rolling (some start as early as two months), their arms need to be free. A baby who rolls onto the tummy with arms wrapped in cannot push up or move their head, so the American Academy of Pediatrics says to stop arms-in swaddling at this point.

That is what TatoWrap+ is for. Remove the sleeves and baby sleeps with arms out, while the body stays zipped in with the same snug, held feeling. The rest of the bedtime routine stays the same, so the change is a small one for baby. The onesie underneath still follows the chart. Our pick for Malaysian nights

TatoWrap Bamboo Swaddle (0–3 months), RM119. A zip swaddle in a 95% bamboo blend that goes straight over baby's onesie. No folding, no muslin blanket on top, and the two-way zip lets you change a nappy at 2am without unzipping the whole swaddle.

When baby starts to roll, move up to TatoWrap+ (3–6 months), RM129. Take the sleeves off for arms-out sleep and keep the swaddle feel. Or get both together in the swaddle bundle for RM229.

Frequently asked questions about what baby should wear under a swaddle

Quick answers for Malaysian nights.

Is it OK for my baby to sleep in an aircond room?

Yes. Aircond often makes it easier to keep the room in a comfortable range. Point the vent away from the cot, dress baby in a onesie and a swaddle as in the chart, and check their chest.

Can my baby wear just the swaddle, without a onesie?

Yes, on a hot night with only a fan. A nappy and the swaddle are enough. Once the aircond is on, add a onesie underneath.

Do I still need a muslin blanket?

Not in the cot. The swaddle replaces it. Use your muslins in the daytime for burping, feeding and shade.

Does my baby need socks or mittens?

Usually not. Cool hands and feet are normal. If the chest is warm, baby is warm.

What is the ideal room temperature for a baby to sleep in?

Safe-sleep guidance recommends 16°C to 20°C. Most Malaysian bedrooms are warmer, even with aircond. If yours is, use fewer layers and check baby's chest rather than trying to make the room colder.

What are the signs of overheating in a newborn?

Sweating, damp hair, flushed cheeks, a hot chest and fast breathing. Remove a layer straight away. If baby seems unwell or has a fever, see your doctor or the nearest Klinik Kesihatan.
