Hip Seat Carrier vs Structured Baby Carrier: Which One Do You Need?

Quick answer

A hip seat carrier is a padded seat on a waistbelt: baby sits on it while you keep one arm around them, from about 6 months. A structured baby carrier, with padded shoulder straps and a body panel, leaves both hands free and works from the early weeks. Choose the structured carrier for travel and long outings, and the hip seat for short, frequent carries.

Your arms are tired.

That is usually when parents start searching for this. Baby is heavier, wants to be carried everywhere, and the stroller is no use on an escalator. So which one do you buy?

First, the names. Both are called "baby carriers", which is where the confusion starts. In this article:

  • Hip seat carrier means a waistbelt with a seat, and no straps over your shoulders. Ours is the TatoHip Carrier.
  • Structured baby carrier means a carrier with shoulder straps, a waistbelt and a body panel. Ours is the TatoSnug Carrier.

How does a hip seat carrier compare with a structured baby carrier?

The hip seat wins on speed and heat; the structured carrier wins on comfort, hands-free carrying and age range.

Best for Short carries, many times a day Travelling and longer trips
Getting baby in and out Seconds. Lift on, lift off A minute or so of buckles and adjusting
Where the weight goes Your waist and hips Shoulders, waist and hips together
In the heat Less fabric between you and baby Warmer. Baby is against your body
If baby falls asleep Possible, but harder. Baby is not strapped in, so you hold them the whole time Easier. The panel holds baby; keep the face visible and the chin off the chest

What does a hip seat carrier do well?

It takes the weight off your arm. Without one, you hold a 9 kg baby with your forearm and a twisted spine. With one, baby's weight sits on a seat at your waist and the wide belt spreads it across your hips.

It is at its best in the "up, down, up again" stage:

  • From the car park to the lift
  • Queueing at the clinic or the bank
  • A crawler or new walker who wants down every five minutes
  • Kenduri and open houses, where everyone wants a turn holding baby

What are the disadvantages of a hip seat carrier?

  • It is not hands-free. One arm stays around baby at all times.
  • Naps are harder. Plenty of babies do doze off on a hip seat. But nothing straps them in, so a sleeping baby slumps and you end up holding all of them with your arm. For a proper nap, a structured carrier or the cot is easier.
  • It is not for young babies. Baby needs to sit with support and hold their head steady.
  • It is not for long carries. After half an hour your arm and one side of your waist will feel it.

Whichever you choose, watch your footing: most carrier injuries are falls. A study presented to the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2021 estimated 14,024 US emergency visits for baby-carrier injuries between 2011 and 2020. In 52% the baby fell from the carrier, and in 22% the parent fell.

What does a structured baby carrier do well?

It gives you your hands back. Baby is held by the carrier, not by you, and the weight is shared between both shoulders and your waist. That is why it stays comfortable for much longer.

It is at its best when you are travelling or out for a long time:

  • Travelling: airports, flights and long drives back to your hometown
  • Longer trips: a day out at the zoo, a holiday, a full day at the mall
  • Pasar malam and wet markets where a stroller will not fit
  • LRT and MRT at rush hour
  • A young baby who only settles when held, while you still need to cook

Where does a structured baby carrier fall short?

  • It is warmer. You and baby share body heat. Dress baby lightly and take breaks.
  • It takes longer to put on. Not ideal for a toddler who wants down two minutes later.
  • It costs more. A good one is an investment, though it is used for longer stretches at a time.

Which is better for baby's hips?

Either can support healthy hips. What matters is the position, not the type of carrier.

The International Hip Dysplasia Institute recommends the M-position: thighs spread around your body and supported, hips bent, knees slightly higher than the bottom. Look at baby from the front and the legs make the letter M.

Do Avoid
Thighs supported all the way to the knee Legs hanging straight down from a narrow seat
Knees a little higher than the bottom Knees pressed together
Baby facing you in the first six months Facing out for long periods in the early months

The institute recommends carrying baby facing inward for the first six months, while the hips are developing fastest.

Whichever you use, follow the American Academy of Pediatrics basics: you can always see baby's face, the chin is off the chest, and nothing covers the nose and mouth.

How do I choose in 30 seconds?

  • Baby is under 6 months: structured baby carrier. A hip seat carrier is not suitable yet.
  • You are travelling or out for most of the day: structured baby carrier.
  • You need both hands (cooking, a second child, bags): structured baby carrier.
  • Baby is 6 months or older and wants up and down all day: hip seat carrier.
  • Your arm or back hurts from carrying on one side: hip seat carrier for short carries, structured baby carrier for anything over 20 to 30 minutes.
  • You do both kinds of carrying: many families own both. The TatoSnug Carrier for trips, the TatoHip Carrier by the front door.

Frequently asked questions: hip seat carrier vs baby carrier

Quick answers to what parents ask most.

Which is better, a hip seat carrier or a structured baby carrier?

Neither is better for everyone. A hip seat carrier is quicker and has less fabric, so it suits short carries with an older baby. A structured baby carrier is more comfortable for travel and longer trips, and is the only one of the two suitable for a young baby.

From what age can I use a hip seat carrier?

Generally from around 6 months, when baby can sit with support and hold their head steady. The TatoHip Carrier is made for 6 to 36 months. Always follow the age and weight guide of the one you buy.

Can my baby sleep in a hip seat carrier?

Some babies do fall asleep on one. Keep your arm around them, make sure their face stays clear and their chin is off their chest, and move them to the cot or a structured carrier for a longer nap.

Are hip seat carriers bad for my back?

Used for short carries, a hip seat carrier is easier on your back than carrying on one arm, because the belt moves the weight to your hips. For long carries, a structured baby carrier spreads the load across both shoulders as well.

Can I use a hip seat carrier for a newborn?

No. A newborn cannot sit or hold their head up. Use a structured baby carrier made for young babies, with baby facing you.

Is a structured baby carrier too hot for Malaysia?

It is warmer than holding baby in your arms. Dress baby in one light layer, stay in the shade or air-con where you can, offer feeds often, and take baby out for a break if either of you is sweating.
